When to Replace Brake Pads on Heavy-Duty Trucks
Oct 2026 · 5 min read
Brake pads are the most critical wear item on any commercial vehicle. Knowing when to replace them prevents accidents, reduces downtime, and lowers overall operating costs.
Warning Signs That Your Brake Pads Need Replacement
Look for these common warning signs:
- Squealing or squealing noise: Most brake pads have a wear indicator that makes a high-pitched noise when the lining is thin.
- Grinding noise: If you hear a metal-on-metal grinding sound, your pads are completely worn out and you need to replace them immediately — you are now damaging the brake disc.
- Longer stopping distance: If your truck takes longer to stop than usual, your brake pads may be overheated or worn.
- Vibration in the steering wheel: This can indicate warped brake discs, often caused by worn pads continuing to be used.
- Pull to one side when braking: Uneven pad wear or a stuck caliper.
Recommended Replacement Intervals
Replacement intervals depend on duty cycle:
- Long-haul highway: 80,000-120,000 km
- Regional delivery: 60,000-90,000 km
- Construction / mining: 40,000-60,000 km
- City / stop-start: 30,000-50,000 km
Tips for Extending Brake Pad Life
- Use engine braking (downshifting) to reduce brake wear
- Avoid hard braking — anticipate stops
- Keep proper tire pressure
- Use quality pads matched to your duty cycle
- Inspect brake pad thickness every service
