What is ECE R90 Certification? Brake Parts Importer's Complete Guide

If you're importing brake pads, brake linings or brake shoes into Europe, the Middle East, Africa or Southeast Asia, you've almost certainly encountered the term "ECE R90". But what does it actually mean — and more importantly, what do you need to check before placing an order with a manufacturer?

What is ECE R90?

ECE R90 is the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe regulation governing replacement brake linings and disc brake pads for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Full title: "Uniform provisions concerning the approval of replacement brake lining assemblies, drum-brake linings and disc-brake pads for power-driven vehicles and their trailers."

In practice, it means: any replacement brake friction part sold in a market that adopts ECE regulations must meet minimum performance standards and be officially approved before it can be legally sold as an OE replacement.

Why Does R90 Matter?

Without R90 approval, brake friction parts are technically illegal to sell in EU/EEA countries, the UK, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia, and many Middle Eastern and African markets. More importantly from a business standpoint:

What Does R90 Testing Actually Involve?

The R90 test protocol is based on the original equipment (OE) brake performance. A replacement pad or lining must prove it performs "equivalent" to the OE part it replaces. Key test sequences include:

1. Cold performance test

Measures friction coefficient at low speed and low temperature. The replacement must be within a defined band (typically 0.85x to 1.15x) of the OE friction output.

2. Speed sensitivity test

Checks how friction changes as vehicle speed increases — important for ensuring consistent braking feel on motorways.

3. Pressure sensitivity test

Verifies that brake force increases predictably with pedal pressure, so the driver's muscle memory from OE brakes still applies.

4. Cold effectiveness and fade tests

Repeated brake applications to simulate a mountain descent, measuring how much the brakes fade under heat. This is the test that separates quality compounds from cheap ones.

5. Recovery test

After the fade test, the part must recover its friction performance as it cools down.

What Does an R90 Approved Mark Look Like?

Every approved friction pad or lining must carry a permanent marking that includes:

Important: The mark must be permanent and legible. If you see a printed sticker that falls off after a few weeks of use, it's not a genuine R90 mark.

What Importers Should Check

When a supplier says "our brake pads are R90 certified", ask for the following:

  1. The actual approval certificate for the specific WVA number you're buying. A single certificate covers a range, but the specific size must be listed on it.
  2. The approval number — you can verify it on the UNECE website or with the issuing authority.
  3. The E-mark country code — different countries have different testing rigor. German (E1), Dutch (E4) and British (E11) approvals are generally the most respected.
  4. Sample physical marking — ask for photos of the actual E90 mark on the pad or lining, not just the certificate PDF.

At SAITE, all of our disc brake pads and drum brake linings are available with ECE R90 approval, and we can provide certificates and E-mark samples on request. We also hold IATF 16949 quality management certification, which is the international standard for automotive component manufacturing.

R90 vs Other Certifications

Certification Market Scope
ECE R90 Europe, Middle East, Africa, parts of Asia Replacement brake friction performance
IATF 16949 Global automotive supply chain Quality management system (factory level)
AMECA North America Aftermarket friction material performance standards
CCC China Mandatory product safety certification for domestic market
