How to Choose the Right Brake Lining for Your Trailer

Oct 2026 · 6 min read · Drum Brake Lining

Selecting the correct brake lining is one of the most important maintenance decisions a fleet manager makes. The wrong material leads to excessive wear, brake fade, noise and unsafe stopping distances. Here is a practical guide for heavy-duty trailer operators.

1. Know Your Duty Cycle

Long-haul highway: Moderate braking, consistent speed. NAO or ceramic lining delivers quiet, stable performance with long service life.

Construction / mining: Repeated hard stops, dust and heat. Semi-metallic lining handles higher temperatures and resists fade better.

Urban delivery: Frequent stop-and-go. Look for lining with good cold friction and low dust.

2. Lining Thickness Matters

Replace lining before it wears below 5 mm. Running too thin damages the brake drum and reduces heat capacity. At SAITE we recommend inspecting lining thickness every 40,000 km on highway routes.

3. Bonded vs Riveted

Bonded lining: Quieter, more contact area, good for city and highway use. Riveted lining: Safer for heavy off-road duty — even if the lining wears, rivets hold it in place longer.

Our most popular drum brake linings include WVA 19486 and WVA 19494 for BPW, SAF and Fuwa trailer axles, as well as WVA 19553 for American-type heavy trucks.
